Optimization of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines through a Combination of Variable-Pitch and Blade Morphing Techniques

A new methodology of optimizing the performance of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) based on both variable-pitch mechanics and wing morphing concept. An aerodynamic optimization of a two- and three-dimensional VAWT cases, at various tip speed ratios and azimuth angles will be performed. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) along with the an appropriate turbulence model will be employed in the two-dimensional test case, while Large Eddy Simulation will be utilized in the three-dimensional test case. The performance of the optimized turbine will be assessed against experimental data available in literature for fixed pitch angle.
