IME students’ participation in IIE ‘11

Written by student Mario El Khoury

Two students, I and Mr. Eddy Fares from the Advanced Manufacturing class Spring 11 worked on a research paper to present for the Lean and Six Sigma conference 2011 in Atlanta, USA. The research paper was titled “Towards a Waste Reduction Prescreening tool for Lean level 1 industries” taking a case study with three Olive Oil Industries in Lebanon. After thorough research and extensive work from the LAU team, the paper was successfully accepted at the conference and we were asked to go present it on September 13th.

The experience from beginning to end was exceptional. The research phase gave us the chance to experiment new methods, learn new information and get exposed to in-depth knowledge of Lean manufacturing; In addition, the conference attendance, allowed us to meet experts in the field, discuss with them on a very high educational level, broaden our horizons and gave us the chance to present our work in front of international peers in the industrial engineering field.

In conclusion I would like to take the opportunity to thank LAU for giving us the opportunity to participate in such an important conference especially Dr. Ramy Harik for his supervision and close follow-up and other peer LAU professors who were extremely helpful along the way
