Research

Tribology device for tooling and automotive applications

Project Details

Abstract

The tribological behavior acting on the rake face of cutting tools with the presence of high-pressure loads is difficult to evaluate. The aim of this research is to design and evaluate a new device for investigating the tribological properties of cutting tools and coatings, as well as, understanding the high-pressure contact effect on tool-chip interface. The new device simulates high pressure contact with possible surface plasticity. The focus on cutting tools will help investigate the different types of wear under different manufacturing conditions through measuring friction forces and their relation to surface properties. A new FEM model will use as input the experimental measurements and simulate local material behavior data as: strain, strain rates, temperature, and stresses. The developed device will also be used for investigating the properties of new tool materials, effect of surface texture and coating types, as well as finding the root causes of tool failures under different machining conditions.
