Research Track Certificate of Completion
The Research Track Certificate of Completion at LAU recognizes undergraduate students who choose to go beyond the traditional curriculum by engaging deeply in faculty-supervised research. To qualify, students must complete 6 credits of Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) and the 3 credits course “GNE598 Research Methods for Engineers”.
Completing the Research Track enriches the academic experience by fostering deeper engagement with inquiry-driven learning. It provides students with a competitive advantage when applying to graduate programs or research-oriented careers, while highlighting their commitment to rigorous investigation and preparedness for advanced academic or technical challenges. Graduates of this track emerge as strong candidates for fast-track PhD pathways and highly competitive fellowships.
To be awarded the Certificate of Completion for the Research Track at LAU, students must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) – 6 credits
These 6 credits will count toward both the major requirements and the Research Track Certificate.
Depending on the major, URE courses may count as:
- Technical elective courses
- SOE signature courses
- Engineering elective courses
2. Research Methods for Engineers (GNE598) – 3 credits
This course equips students with core research skills including literature review, formulation of research questions, ethical research practice and the preparation of proposals and research papers. Students may enroll in GNE598 once they have completed 3 credits of URE or are concurrently registered in 3 credits of URE.
- Majors with a free elective requirement: GNE598 will be counted as a free elective.
- Majors with no free elective requirement: GNE598 must be taken in addition to the required 150 BE credits.
All 9 credits must be completed within the student’s degree timeline.
After fulfilling the requirements, students must apply for the certificate through the School of Engineering Dean’s Office. The application should include a transcript showing successful completion of the required credits and a recommendation from the research supervisor.
