Geotechnical Design of the JYD Commercial Center
The structure considered in this project is the JYD Commercial Center, located in Anfe in the North Governorate of Lebanon (Figure 1). The development consists of a podium of five common floors at street level, surmounted by two residential towers of fourteen floors each. Below the podium, three parking basements are provided. The associated excavation extends to 13.5 m below natural ground level, measured to the top of the proposed mat foundation, and to 15.5 m at the bottom of the mat.
The project is split between three group members. The structural design is carried out by Daniel Baddour, the construction-management aspects by Maria Ishac, and the geotechnical design — which is the subject of this report — by the author. The geotechnical scope covers the interpretation of the soil investigation, the seismic site classification, the design of the foundation system, and the design of the temporary shoring system that retains the excavation during construction. Throughout the report, the soil parameters, structural loads, and excavation geometry have been coordinated with the structural and construction-management group members to ensure that each element of the design is consistent with the others and with the construction sequence.
