HALO: An Intelligent Safety Helmet for Motorcyclists
HALO is a smart helmet attachment designed as a safety system to protect motorcyclists and reduce crash rates by monitoring both the driver and his surroundings. While motorcyclists face significant higher fatality risks, especially due to blind spots, phone use, microsleep and unexpected weather change, HALO presents a solution for each of the listed causes aligned with three sustainable development goals: Good Health and Well-being, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Through its innovative features, HALO enhances rider safety and reduces accident-related consequences.
Microsleep and Blind Spot Detection
Blind spots are the number one causes of deadly motorcycle crashes. Similarly, microsleep at high speeds can lead to catastrophic outcomes. To address both issues, HALO is equipped with front and back cameras, monitoring traffic and driver blinking patterns. Using machine learning models, HALO alerts the driver in the event of fatigue or cars in their blind spots, preventing potential crashes.
On Board Display and Crash Detection
To support rider awareness and prevent mobile phone use, HALO introduces a compact on-board display mounted within the helmet’s visor. The display relies on icons and colors with minimal texts to provide weather updates, navigation assistance and blind spots visualization. In the event of a potential crash, the screen displays an emergency message; in case the rider does not cancel the message, the emergency feature is activated and a message with the rider’s current location is delivered to the predefined emergency contact. This feature enhances safety, by providing on-board assistance without compromising focus or visibility.
Mobile Application
HALO mobile application serves as a central interface, fetching user location and destination and recording rides. Each ride alongside its average speed, time and distance are saved in the app history. Additionally, the user inputs the emergency contact through the app which saves it in the database.
With a fully integrated design centered on Raspberry Pi 5 microcontroller and optimized for low power consumption, HALO introduces a reliable, wearable safety system tailored for modern motorcyclists. By combining ease of use, flexibility and innovative features, “HALO” is the best copilot for every biker.
